Sprinklers kept popping up throughout the busy school day at Blandford Elementary on Wednesday. But the Rowland Heights students didn’t mind, in fact, they wanted them to come on so they could study water conservation.

It was just another experiment in the LivingWise Program sponsored by Southern California Edison and Southern California Gas. The utilities want everyone to learn how to conserve energy as young as possible.

So the sixth-graders were out on the playground, clipboards in hand to record exactly how much water the school’s sprinklers used. They even planted small rain gauges around the lawns so they knew how much water fell everywhere.

“Grass needs an inch of water a week,” explained 12-year-old Justin Santos. “So we wanted to see how much the sprinklers sprayed on our grass.”

Classmate Michelle Kwan agreed that it’s not wise to waste water since we’re in the middle of a severe drought. The 12-year-old is becoming water wise.

“Last week, we put dye tablets in our toilets at home to see if they were leaking,” Kwan said. “It’s just another way to save our natural resources.”

Teacher Suzanne Wong said her students were really enjoying the special LivingWise Program.

“They really become involved in experiments like the dye tablets,” Wong said.
